I've been working heartily all morning to complete a little project of mine...in between snacks and playtime and dishes of course *smile. We have 4 cute little girls in our family [excluding my cutie] who all love princesses and fairy tales, so I thought why not make them wands for their birthdays. The first birthday is in March but of course it's easier to make them all at once, so spiffy for me when the July birthdays roll around, I'll have their magic present all done!
[Side note: This project is not only super inexpensive + a good way to use up old paper & ribbon scraps, but is really just a trial and error process. The sky is the limit when it comes to deciding how to decorate your wand. I tried mixing & matching several different patterns of paper before finding a good mix. So let your imagination be your guide.]
| Supplies: Glue Gun, Ribbon, Wood Dowel & Star, Paper Scraps, Mod Podge. |
| I chose this painted star so that only one side had to be covered. |
| Trace star on back side of paper & cut inside the pen line. |
| Paint mod podge onto star and press paper star onto it. |
| Free hand child's initial for personalization. |
| Use mod podge bottle to trace a circle and cut out. |
| Other ideas if you'd like to spice up the plain circle. |
| Mod podge both the circle & the letter onto the star. |
| I added small scraps of cute paper for more decoration. |
| After the layers have dried, apply a second coat of mod podge. |
| You will need about 41.4 inches of ribbon for a 3/8"x12" dowel. |
| Put a dab of glue on one side of the dowel and adhere ribbon. |
| Add a bit more glue as you wrap the top of the dowel with ribbon. |
| Twist the dowel & even the ribbon out to fall right beneath the above twist. |
| Hot glue is only used to adhere the top and bottom of the ribbon to the dowel. |
| Choose several other short ribbons to glue to the top of the dowel. |
| Place a big dollop of hot glue onto the bottom of the star. |
| Place the dowel into the glue and hold for several seconds. |
| There you have it, really cute & unique wands for lots of imaginary play. |
